Large Scale Integration of Wind Power in the Nordic Power System

In this project a complete steady state model of the swedish transmission network was developed in order to study the steady state stability of the network affected by the large scale penetration of wind power. With the developed model, a set of indices measuring the impact of the large scale integration of the wind resources, substituting some conventional generation with this kind of renewable energy was calculated and thus the quantification of the real impact of wind penetration was measured.

Development of a software simulator for electrical railway networks including a dynamical multi-train environment for power flow analysis and optimization

A first version of a software for simulating electrical DC traction networks was developed, this software started using the general algorithms of the conventional power flow, however a comprehensive system for being able to easily change the location of the trains in the network without using a complex tracking subroutine was developed and successfully implemented, the software uses the mechanical data provided by another software package developed by the company and transform this mechanical data into electrical interactions between the trains.

Strategies evaluations for setting up wind park for new operation procedures requirements by means of simulations and small scale tests

The employed methodology was based in a state-space representation of large wind plants, through models including the internal dynamics of the grid and taking also into account a detailed modeling of the dynamics of wind generators (multi-machine system instead of aggregated systems).

Fault detection and location in distribution networks using self organizing maps

In this project, some correlation between different measurement systems, located at different points of the network and the type and location of the faults in such networks were obtained using Self Organized Maps (SOM). This kind of maps are a type of artificial neural network (ANN) that is trained using unsupervised learning to produce a two-dimensional, discretized representation of the input samples. It was demonstrated the benefits of using this tool to analyze large amount of data discovering visual correlation between them.

Investigation about fault in power plant derived from the anti-islanding protection

A short circuit occurred in a specific location of the medium voltage of the Spanish distribution network, derived from this short circuit one of the electrical generators in a power plant connected to the mentioned networks suffered a breakdown in one of its windings. It wasn’t clear if the distribution company was responsible or if the protection system of the power plant was not correct set up. A transient simulation including a portion of the distribution network, the power plant and its protection system was developed to find out who should pay for the damages.

Technical-Economic analysis for a combined heat and power system based in gas furnaces with Stirling motors

In this project, a standard induction motor IEC frame size 132 has been designed, so that its output performance is equivalent to that of a motor of IEC frame size 160. A new design methodology relaying on ANN-based and Stochastic-based search optimization procedures was developed during the project. The technological transfer was corroborated by incorporating the designed motor in the product brochures of the company in 2006.
